Annotation In Video Conferencing: A Powerful Tool
Annotation in Video Conferencing: A Powerful Tool
1. Annotation Definition in context of Video Conferencing:
Annotation is feature provided within Video Conferencing Equipment/Software, through which during a video call from a Desktop Client or Video Endpoint; PC/Laptop applications are shared with the remote end by using H.239 standard, and online Highlighting and Marking of important points of selected applications can be made without actually changing the original document.
2. Other Common Definitions of Annotation (Not pertaining to Video Conferencing)
a) Annotation Definition in context of Literature:
An annotation is a summary made of information in a book, document, online record, video, software code or other information. Commonly this is used, for example, in draft documents, where another reader has written notes about the quality of a document at a certain point, “in the margin”, or perhaps just underlined or highlighted passages. Annotated bibliographies, give descriptions about how each source is useful to an author in constructing a paper or argument. Creating these comments, usually a few sentences long, establishes a summary for and expresses the relevance of each source prior to writing.
b) Annotation Definition in context of Software Programming:
Annotations provide data about a program that is not part of the program itself. They have no direct effect on the operation of the code they annotate.
c) Annotation Definition in context of Imaging:
In the digital imaging community the term annotation is commonly used for visible metadata superimposed on an image without changing the underlying master image, such as virtual laser pointers, circles, arrows, and black-outs (cf. redaction).
Standard Features of Annotation during Video Conferencing on H.239 protocol at a Glance
1. Annotation tool should be integral part of Video Conferencing Endpoint/Desktop Client with all the tools clearly visible via simple GUI(Graphical User Interface).
2. Annotation tool should be application independent and should support virtually all the applications, like Acrobat Reader, Web Browsers, MS Office, Image Viewers etc.
3. It should provide facility to Draw and Highlight with the help of Mouse/Touch Panel.
4. Annotation GUI should provide marking tools like Drawing Pen and Highlighter. These tools should come with user selectable colors and thickness adjustments.
5. Annotation GUI should have feature to erase whole or part of annotated markings. However, all annotated markings should get cleared automatically when next slide or application is switched.
6. There should be an option to select specific application softwares, presentations, files, etc which are running in the PC/Laptop and are desired to be shared on H.239 protocol during a video call for annotation. This ensures non-exposure of critical data to the far end during the annotation, since there is a substantial amount of switching and toggling between different applications during the annotation (for example, switching to next slide, removing annotated data/markings etc).
