AIM is a part of AOL (America Online). AIM is a messaging client that allows users to communicate to one another. In order for this to work, each person has to have a screen name, at which they log in along with a password. There are a variety of programs out there that allow you to use your AIM screen name to log in. So, the PC user will most likely download AIM's program, and the Mac user will most likely use iChat, although he can download AIM or a variety of different messengers.
