Skype IS the best software. It’s not the software, but rather the connection. Your friend is in Iraq! Chances are the base only allots a small amount of speed to him. Even with good speeds, the lag between the continents will be significant.

Also, the hardware at both ends makes a huge difference, if one or both of you are using sub-par microphones, it’ll suck.
