Main benefit is that it’s free (if you talk computer to computer) or cheaper than alternatives (if you call a telephone). Also you can do video conferencing for free if you want.
Main drawback is sometimes the quality is not great, and it is more cumbersome to use than just picking up the phone.
Two services to look at are Skype (for communications you set up on a computer) and Jajah (good callback service that is cheap or free and good quality)
